Director:
We look forward to the future of education and see the opportunity to bridge a gap. Our challenge is to create a learning environment for at-risk student populations.

What is the STAR School?

The STAR School is an East Central Ohio Educational Service Center (ECOESC) alternative school for behavior problem or truant adolescents. The STAR School simulates a school environment, providing a structured academic program. Students are given guidance in accepting responsibilities in the areas of attendance, punctuality, participation, assigned tasks, and behavior while attending the STAR School. Students are ages 6-19, in grades 1-12.

Academic Program

The STAR Alternative School serves students, ages 1-19 that requires support to make positive adjustments in the critical areas of home, school, and peer relationships. Our staff provides structured support in a cooperative school environment through academic instruction, guidance, and community service.

As an alternative school, STAR places emphasis on understanding individual learning styles and skill levels. Students are placed in classes according to the graduation requirements of their home school. Staff recognizes individual strengths and develops approaches and compensatory learning strategies needed to remedy academic weakness.

Course Offerings

The core curriculum provides subjects meeting the requirements of their home school and the content standards mandated by the Ohio Department of Education. Subject areas include, but are not limited to, English, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Life Skills, and Physical Education.

Counseling

Counseling is an important component in the overall STAR program. Collaboration with community counseling programs such as; Juvenile Court, Job and Family Services, COMPASS, Community Mental Health, the Tuscarawas County Health Department, The Village Network, Personal and Family Counseling, Alcohol & Drug Addiction meets this need. It works in partnership with the academic program to benefit students and families. Using a problem-solving approach, the integration of school, family, and community issues is essential to long-term behavioral change.

Progress Report

The STAR Alternative School brings together all of the individual student's support systems in order to promote change. We provide to the student's home school and their parents a mid-term and nine week report card. All aspects of the reports are brought together through daily and weekly goal setting, evaluations, grades, and staff meetings. The progress report provides an opportunity to visibly see the progress the staff and student have made.

Discipline

Emphasis is placed on positive, useful, and socially acceptable behaviors in school, home, with peers, and within a school setting. The rules of the STAR School are those which would be applied to any school environment. Students are given guidance in accepting responsibility for their behavior and to encourage fellow students to work toward productive goals as a team. The STAR School provides a small, comfortable atmosphere with clear and strong expectations. We encourage mutual respect and reward positive performance.

In order to achieve personal goals, all participants must commit to daily attendance, complete assignments, stay drug free, and not participate in any behavior that would necessitate court involvement.

Families must maintain a commitment to improve family functioning and approach problem solving with a collaborative spirit that allows for open communications between parents, students, and staff.

  • Students and parents must be willing to participate in all aspects of the program.
  • High School students must demonstrate a minimum of a 4th grade reading level
