ASL Interpreter

Dover City Schools

In coordination with Dover City Schools, the East Central Ohio ESC is seeking an ASL Interpreter beginning with the 2026-27 school year.  This position will work directly with students who require assistance in the classroom due to an identified hearing impairment.  This position facilitates communication between the student and teacher, peer or staff member to ensure instruction is communicated effectively and students are able to fully participate in the learning process. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma; Associate’s degree preferred
  • Valid Ohio license or permit appropriate for the assignment
  • Record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language and oral interpreting; ASL certification preferred

 

Responsibilities:

The following duties and responsibilities are representative of performance expectations but are not all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned as necessary.  

  • Provides interpreting services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in all areas of the educational environment
  • May provide tutoring and/or note-taking services for identified students as needed
  • Offers help when students ask for, or their behavior suggests they need assistance; mediates student concerns discreetly
  • Encourages student(s) to actively participate in the classroom and engage with peers; supports an inclusive environment
  • Participates as a member of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team at meetings
  • Makes recommendations regarding communication in the development and review of progress on the IEP, including evaluations of student use of an interpreter
  • Provides interpreting for conferences, telephone calls, assemblies, concerts, ceremonies, field trips or parent meetings when necessary
  • Provides the accommodation of interpreting of verbal classroom assessments under the direction of the classroom teacher
  • Collaborates with teaching staff to continuously improve communication strategies and implement classroom modifications/accommodations as requested
  • May provide interpreting for extra-curricular sports/activities beyond contract hours
  • Carries out classroom management or individual behavior plan as designed by classroom teacher and/or IEP team
  • Participates in staff meetings, parent/teacher meetings and other conferences as needed
  • Performs other job-related duties as required
