Intervention Specialist – STAR Alternative

East Central Ohio ESC

The East Central Ohio ESC is seeking an Intervention Specialist to join the team at STAR Alternative for the 2025-26 school year.  Based in New Philadelphia, STAR Alternative serves students primarily in middle school and high school grade levels who require an alternative setting for their education.  Classes sizes are small, allowing for students to focus on their individual development.

At STAR Alternative, the Intervention Specialist will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating student learning experiences that address a wide range of maturity and skill levels.  The Intervention Specialist will assess the levels and needs of students and will participate in the development of the Individual Education Plan in accordance with applicable sections of the Ohio Administrative Code  This position will also provide direction and training to assigned classroom assistants or aides.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education
  • Valid Ohio license or permit appropriate for the assignment – Intervention Specialist Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Intensive teaching field
  • Previous experience working with students with developmental disabilities and/or emotional and behavioral disorders is preferred
  • Record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees/teaches scheduled classes; documents teaching performance objectives according to district guidelines
  • Plans and implements instructional programs and ensures lesson plans align with adopted courses of study and are consistent with IEPs
  • Makes teaching materials, class lists, and classroom procedures readily available for substitutes
  • Creates effective learning experiences for all students through instruction and use of learning materials and equipment; uses relevant technology to support instruction
  • Carries out assigned duties related to the general welfare of the students (e.g., safety precautions, self-help needs, etc.)
  • Provides parents/families/caregivers with educational guidance including information/strategies to reinforce skills learned in school
  • Identifies problems that may impede learning and/or the social integration of students; helps identify families that may need intervention services
  • Facilitates the transition process for students entering or leaving the alternative education program
  • Implements effective pupil management by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures
  • Monitors the progress of individual students and evaluates the needs of students based on all available information
  • Participates as an interdisciplinary team member in making recommendations for educational program goals, instructional objectives, and methods of instruction in the IEPs of assigned students
  • Makes referrals for student assistance/intervention when a need is identified; meets mandated deadlines for required paperwork and works with team members to develop a plan
  • Helps prepare and implement IEPs for students meeting eligibility requirements
  • Varies instructional techniques to address individual learning styles; facilitates the use of critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills
  • Collaborate with other teachers to share knowledge and resources that enhance student learning
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of student progress and development; updates all necessary information accurately and completely as required by law and district policies
  • Prepares the classroom (physical or remote) and requisitions supplies as needed
  • Evaluates student achievement/performance and assigns grades; prepares progress reports and consults with parents as needed
  • Consults with support personnel to address student concerns (i.e., excessive absences, at-risk behavior, mental/physical health, etc.)
  • Works with supervisors and staff to eliminate unacceptable or unsafe  conditions or behaviors and provides direction and training to assigned classroom assistants or student aides
  • Participates in conferences, staff meetings and professional growth opportunities as directed
  • Performs other job-related duties as required
