Purpose
Objectives
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) has identified Speech-Language Impairment (SLI) as the most disproportionate category in special education. Key contributing factors include:
Overuse of the SLI category.
Limited and narrowly focused evaluations.
Inconsistent processes for distinguishing at-risk students from those with documented disabilities.
Insufficient consideration of cultural, environmental, and linguistic differences.
Lack of support and knowledge among school administrators on effective evaluation and identification practices.
This year, the SLPC-SPC project is focused on two primary goals:
Ensuring compliance in conducting evaluations.
Developing robust intervention programs for students identified as at-risk for SLI.
Benefits to Districts
Improving evaluation and identification processes.
Strengthening compliance to address significant disproportionality and disproportionate representation.
Supporting staff to enhance efficiency and retention.
