Young Authors’ and Illustrators’ Conference and Competition

Location: Kent State University Tuscarawas

Dates: Friday, October 18, 2019 and Friday, February 21, 2020

The Youth Authors’ and Illustrators’ Conference and Competition are a fantastic opportunity for our most talented 5th grade and 9th grade writers and illustrators.  Day one, October 18th, will consist of a true writers’ and illustrators’ conference with keynote speakers, Sara Holbrook and Michael Salinger for authors and Greg Scott for illustrators. Students will focus on mentorship and collaboration as young authors partner with young illustrators to create a compelling and visually appealing story together. 9th graders and 5th graders will have time to focus together on what it means to  be an author/illustrator and help each other as they work on their story.  Students will be required to bring a sack lunch for this day hosted by Kent State University Tuscarawas.

Students will work on their stories from October 18th until January 10th, when they will submit their story for the competition in February.

The merriment continues on day two, February 21st, and will consist of a full workshop of their finished story/illustrations, plus the results of the competition! Students will get to read their peers’ stories, give feedback, receive feedback on their own stories, and learn about other writing and art opportunities.

KSU Tuscarawas will provide a certificate for a scholarship for the top overall prize in each age group.  Winning Authors and Illustrators will be published and displayed at the Local Libraries.  The event will be hosted by Kent State University Tuscarawas. Lunch and t-shirts will be provided.
