Title: American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter

Overview:
In coordination with Bridgeport Exempted Village Schools, the East Central Ohio ESC is seeking an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter for a 1:1 position. An ASL Interpreter works with students who require assistance in the classroom due to an identified hearing impairment. This position facilitates communication between the student and teacher, peer or staff member to ensure instruction is communicated effectively and students are able to fully participate in the learning process. The ASL interpreter may use technology to provide services for distance learning.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma; Associate’s degree preferred
- Valid Ohio Associate License – Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired
- Record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and oral interpreting; ASL certification preferred
Responsibilities:
The following duties and responsibilities are representative of performance expectations, but are not considered all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned as necessary. A reasonable accommodation may be to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions:
- Provides interpreting services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in all areas of the educational environment
- May provide tutoring and/or note taking services for identified students as needed
- Offers help when students ask for or their behavior suggests they need assistance; mediates student concerns discreetly
- Encourages student(s) to actively participate in the classroom and engage with peers; supports an inclusive environment
- Participates as a member of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team at meetings
- Makes recommendations regarding communication in the development and review of progress on the IEP, including evaluations of student use of an interpreter
- Provides interpreting for conferences, telephone calls, assemblies, concerts, ceremonies, field trips or parent meetings when necessary
- Provides the accommodation of interpreting of verbal classroom assessments under the direction of the classroom teacher
- Collaborates with teaching staff to continuously improve communication strategies and implement classroom modifications/accommodations as requested
- May provide interpreting for extra-curricular sports/activities beyond contract hours
- Carries out classroom management or individual behavior plan as designed by classroom teacher and/or IEP team
- Participates in staff meetings, parent/teacher meetings and other conferences as needed
- Performs other job-related duties as required

- Ensures the safety of students and colleagues; watches for problem situations and works with staff to eliminate unacceptable behaviors and/or conditions
- Reports suspected child abuse and/or neglect to legal authorities as required by law
- Participates in professional growth opportunities that improve future performance
Skills & Abilities:
- Must have strong command of ASL and the English language
- Efficient at using listening, speaking, signing and memory skills to communicate with students
- Performs work activities with limited supervision
- Proactively addresses student behavior; reacts to interruptions and changing classroom conditions effectively
- Uses verbal and nonverbal skills to communicate with staff and students
- Completes paperwork accurately and verifies information is correct
- Exercises self-control when dealing with difficult situations and individuals; must have strong diplomacy skills
- Ability to assist students that may have additional disabilities (i.e., mobility issues, transferring, positioning, etc.)
- May be required to successfully complete training in communicable disease, child abuse & neglect, CPR, first aide, and/or behavioral management
