The English Language Learner population in the United States has seen a surge in growth over the past few years. In Tuscarawas County alone, there has been an huge increase in English Language Learners attending area school districts. In order to meet the diverse needs of the ELL students, the ESC offers a variety of options to support school districts with this population.
SIOP Training
During this training, teachers will be introduced to the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) framework. SIOP is a research-based model that focuses on best teaching practices with an emphasis on language. Teachers attending this workshop will learn strategies and activities that they can apply in their classrooms immediately to support their English Language Learners in the content classroom.
ELL Testing
Ohio has adopted a new English Language Learner assessment titled the OELPA (Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment). The ESC can provide consultation on how to deliver the test and also help to administer this test. The ESC also can provide Initial Placement Testing for newly enrolled English Language Learners.
Individual Coaching
Britni Barrino, a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certified teacher can offer individual coaching to school districts and their teachers to help implement and support them in best teaching practices regarding English Language Learners.
