Professional Development/Training

McKinney-Vento and Related

Under the federal McKinney-Vento Act, every LEA is required to designate a liaison for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Homeless Liaisons have ten specific duties under the law, one of which is to provide professional development and other support for school personnel. This training is
essential for children and youth experiencing homelessness to be identified and to receive the education that is their surest path out of homelessness and poverty.

Many districts assign McKinney-Vento training modules through PSW or similar options, but growing numbers of personnel trained through these modules report less than a full understanding of the regulations that apply to them and a desire for more information germane to their roles in the district. We can provide resources for districts by designing targeted professional development related to the education of youth experiencing homelessness for those in specific staff roles such as:

⇒ Transportation Personnel     ⇒ Food Service Staff
⇒ Office/Enrollment Staff         ⇒ Support Staff
⇒ School Counselors                 ⇒ Teachers
⇒ Administrators                        ⇒ Resource Officers

PD sessions can also be designed to address the finer details of McKinney-Vento compliance for those in more specialized roles, working most closely with vulnerable youth such as:

⇒ Homeless Liaisons      ⇒ Family Advocates, Social Workers

Sessions can be adapted to district needs, whether you prefer a general seminar with breakout sessions by staff roles or single sessions specific to a group. We can design an approach that will work for most any size group and for any duration, again depending on local preferences. Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can support your efforts to serve the needs of our vulnerable young people, especially those experiencing homelessness.
