Under the direct supervision of the School Nurse, the School Nurse Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the health and well-being of students and staff within the Dover City School District. This position assists in providing basic healthcare services, managing student health needs, maintaining accurate records, and fostering a safe and healthy school environment. The School Nurse Assistant will work closely with the School Nurse to ensure students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Providing Basic First Aid:  Administer basic first aid and comfort measures to students and staff for minor injuries and illnesses according to established protocols.
  • Assisting in the Management of Acute and Chronic Illnesses: Work collaboratively with the School Nurse in the care and management of students with acute and chronic health conditions, following individualized health care plans, 504 plans, and physician orders.
  • Medication Administration and Documentation: Administer prescribed medications to students according to school policy and under the delegation of the School Nurse, ensuring accurate documentation of medication administration.
  • Assisting with Health Screenings: Assist the School Nurse in conducting various health screenings, such as vision, hearing, and scoliosis, and accurately record the results.
  • Collecting, Organizing, and Reporting Immunization Records: Collect, organize, and maintain student immunization records, ensuring compliance with state regulations. Assist with required immunization reporting.
  • Responding to Emergencies and Providing Care: Respond to medical emergencies, provide immediate care within the scope of training, and assist until further medical help arrives. This includes applying knowledge gained through provided training in CPR, First Aid, and specific conditions such as seizures, diabetes, and asthma.
  • Documenting Student Clinic Visits: Accurately document all student clinic visits, including the reason for the visit, assessment findings, interventions provided, and follow-up actions, utilizing school-approved technology.
  • Taking Vital Signs: Accurately measure and record student vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, as directed by the School Nurse.
  • Communicating with Parents and School Staff: Communicate effectively with parents/guardians and school staff regarding student health concerns, following established communication protocols and maintaining confidentiality under the direction of the School Nurse.
  • Participating in Staff Training and Education: Actively participate in required staff training and professional development opportunities, including specific training related to CPR, First Aid, seizure management, diabetes care, and asthma management.
  • Assisting with External Care Provider Appointments: Assist the School Nurse in scheduling student appointments with external healthcare providers and coordinating necessary health-related information.
  • Other Duties as Directed: Perform other duties as assigned by the School Nurse or school administration to support the health and safety of the school community.

 

Qualifications:

  • Licensed LPN, CNA, MA, or STNA preferred
  • Record free of criminal background that would prohibit employment in a public school
  • Ability to obtain an Educational Aide permit and/or be enrolled in RapBack following offer of employment
  • School nurse assistants will be employed 5 hours per day, five days a week.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (training may be provided upon hire).
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and school administration.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in record-keeping.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
    Proficiency in basic computer skills
  • A caring and empathetic attitude towards students and staff.

  • Start date August 2025-2026 school year
